Introducing Skill Tracker

A clear, intuitive solution to tracking Approaches to Learning Skills for teachers, students and administrators.

What it is

Skill Tracker is a platform that enables students and teachers to track student progress with regards to ATL skills. It ultimately shifts the burden of managing students' ATL skill progress away from teachers and empowers students to log, track and take ownership of their journey through Skill development. Through elements of gamification, it solves the challenge of motivating students to track their ATL skill development. Creating cross-channel reports is a snap with Skill Tracker since it records all of the student ATL activity, providing detailed and customizable reports. The app additionally provides schools with a quick and easy method to track student skill development across subject areas, providing the required evidence of learning necessary for when schools go through authorization and evaluation.

Why Skill Tracker

With the tightening of ATL requirements coming in 2020 for schools in the International Baccalaureate community, it will become more crucial that IB schools are able to properly record, evidence and report the Skills that students are honing.  Skill Tracker represents a major step forward for IB schools to enable Student Agency and meet the new IB requirements for certification. It has been created with an eye toward the support of metacognition, which enables students to have an awareness and understanding of which skills are being developed. With this awareness, students can engage with teachers to ask them to focus on gaps. This in turn gives students voice, choice and agency - influencing what, when and how subjects are taught.

"The ATL skill tracker is a fantastic vehicle for putting students at the centre of their own learning journey. Students reflect on their approaches to learning skills by considering how the work they are producing evidences specific skill development. The tracker is student-friendly, intuitive and brings to life ATL skills from the page of the unit planner to the heart of the classroom."

The Skill Tracker Student App

What it does

Skill Tracker shifts the job of monitoring ATL skills away from teachers and empowers students to track their skills. Students can log evidence of their skill development, tracking their progress across the IB’s five ATL categories. Additionally, all Skills-related data generated by students provides teachers with up to the minute feedback on student skill development as well as curriculum planning and teaching.

In order to maintain student engagement, Skill Tracker also employs many elements of gamification, providing a motivating way to engage with ATL. The app has been built with customisable themes, with new themes and gamification elements to be added over the course of the upcoming school year. There are also in-app awards for the completion of different series of tasks as well as in-app recognition for the use of the app over period of time. This has the purpose of incentivising the students to keep up to date and accurate records, thereby increasing student agency.

Teacher and Admin Portal

Intuitive Setup and Informative Reports

The intuitive Teacher Portal allows teachers and administrators to monitor students’ progress at the individual, class, department and school level. Teachers can easily create multi-purpose reports showing student performance with flexible levels of granularity. A teacher can use these reports to drill down and look at individual student and class performance as well as easily build comparative reports across departments.

Actionable Data

The Portal also gives teachers and administrators access to highly informative and actionable data. This student generated data is intuitively organised in Skill Tracker and provides real-time feedback on skill development that handily informs curriculum planning, teaching and assessment. This can help teachers to identify gaps in curriculum, adjust their course planning according to what students might be lacking according to their tracked skills. As a further benefit, this can also be part of an informative discussion in Student/Parent/Teacher conferences.
